The city was previously known as Vijaypur, which means ‘The City of Victory’ and it was rules by the Chalukyas during the period of 11th and 12th century. However, after the Chalukyas, the city’s destiny changed under the guidance and patronage of Bahamani Sultanate of Gulbarga. This is the reason why it was rechristened as Bijapur. It is during the 15th century, Yusuf Adil Shah founded the Shah dynasty and it is during this period that the city had its golden period.

Gol Gumbaz is considered as the world’s largest dome, Jama Masjid is the biggest mosque in the area and Ibrahim Rauza is known for its beauty. Malik-e-Maidan, the world’s largest cannon from the medieval ages is another important and major attraction of the place.

Bijapur was later controlled by Aurangzeb, who took control from Adil Shah Dynansty. The rule of the city then changed hands from the Marathas and finally to the British.
