Forts, Gardens and Mosques in Bijapur

Karnataka is known for a state that has plenty of historical places and Bijapur Sultanate is one such place. This is one of the popular medieval cities in the state that is known for its forts, mosques and gardens. The city was first founded in the 11th century by the Chalukyas. The regal monuments in the area are special attractions of this place.

The city was previously known as Vijaypur, which means ‘The City of Victory’ and it was rules by the Chalukyas during the period of 11th and 12th century. However, after the Chalukyas, the city’s destiny changed under the guidance and patronage of Bahamani Sultanate of Gulbarga. This is the reason why it was rechristened as Bijapur. It is during the 15th century, Yusuf Adil Shah founded the Shah dynasty and it is during this period that the city had its golden period.

During the reign of Adil Shah and the Shah Dynasty, the city had some significant additions with several architectural marvels and most of them are in good shape till today. The city takes pride in having more than 20 mausoleums, 50 mosques and several palaces, which are the remnants of the past periods that went by ages ago.

There are several architectural marvels that should be on the tour list when one visits the city. Gol Gumbaz is considered as the world’s largest dome, Jama Masjid is the biggest mosque in the area and Ibrahim Rauza is known for its beauty. Some of the other major attractions of the place include Upri Burj, Gagan Mahal, Chandi Bawdi and also some other gardens in the region. Malik-e-Maidan, the world’s largest cannon from the medieval ages is another important and major attraction of the place.

Bijapur was later controlled by Aurangzeb, who took control from Adil Shah Dynansty. The rule of the city then changed hands from the Marathas and finally to the British. There are plenty of budget accommodations available in & around the city especially the place near the railway station on the Jatta Road.
